Severe Acne And Acne Scar Treatments

While acne may present itself in various forms starting from mild to severe, the severe cases of acne are most distressing because of its persistent nature. Thus a patient suffering from severe acne not only feels embarrassed but it can seriously affect the person's sense of self-esteem.

Severe acne conditions bring about serious damage to the skin such as deep cysts, scars, and inflammation of the skin. In such situations treatment usually lasts for years before desired result is achieved. Thus it is absolutely necessary to consult a professional when you are thinking of treating severe acne. Starting from physical procedures to prescription drugs, there is a wide variety of treatment options for handling severe acne. Some of the popular treatment routes followed by doctors include:

Drainage and Surgical Excision

Isotretinoin

Interlesional Corticosteroid Injection

Also known as ‘acne surgery', drainage and suirgical excision is perhaps the best treatment options available for treating severe acne. Large cysts usually do not respond to oral medication and drainage and extraction is the only way out of the situation. It has been seen that drainage and surgical excision is particularly effective in treating and eradicating cysts.

Patients of severe acne should never take the treatment of the ailment using drainage and surgical excision route in their own hands. Always consult a trained professional to undertake severe acne treatment which should always be done under sterile conditions.

Acting on all possible factors which cause acne, Isotretinoin is a prescription drug which is available as a pill. This is so far the best oral treatment for acne. Containing a powerful synthetic steroid, this pill must be taken for sixteen to twenty weeks for achieving the desired results. It is necessary for the patient to take all the pills as prescribed by the doctor.

Sometimes a patient is tempted to give up the oral medication, as soon as some improvement is visible, but it must be remembered that giving up on the medication mid-way, just increases the chances of a relapse. Though this is the best oral treatment for severe acne, it must be remembered that there are numerous side effects associated with this therapy.

Defect in the developing fetus is one of the most serious side effects of this drug. So it is wise to be prepared for all the side effects of this drug, before you choose this to be your treatment of choice.

The injection route for treating severe acne scars can be found in the interlesional corticosteroid injection which is also a preferred form of medication recommended by doctors.

Doctors would inject diluted corticosteroid in to a cyst. The result of corticosteroid injection is that it reduces inflammation, and heals the acne before it has burst and formed scars.

There are visible results after the interlesional corticosteroid injections within five days when you see the cysts melting away.
